So Neil Warnock walked out of Cardiff thinking that it was going to be a long retirement, not knowing that one year later he’d be back on the Championship scene. On Monday 23rd June it was confirmed that Neil Warnock would become the new Middlesbrough manager after Jonathan Woodgate left the club knowing his contract would expire at the end of the month. Warnock has been a full-time manager since becoming manager of then Northern Premier League side Gainsborough Trinity during the 1980-81 season, after doing some Sunday League coaching. Since then, the 71-year-old from Sheffield has gone on to manage the following clubs:

Burton Albion, Scarborough, Notts County, Torquay United, Huddersfield Town, Plymouth Argyle, Oldham Athletic, Bury, Sheffield United, Crystal Palace, Queens Park Rangers, Leeds United, Crystal Palace (for the second time), Queens Park Rangers (for the second time, but this time as caretaker manager), Rotherham United, Cardiff City and now, Middlesbrough.

Warnock’s highest win rate was a 50% win rate during his second stint as Queens Park Rangers manager in the EFL Championship, between 5th November and 4th December 2015, with wins over Leeds United (1-0 at home) and Reading (1-0 away) and a 0-0 draw against Preston (at home). His only loss came against Middlesbrough, when Leroy Fer got a red card in the 92nd minute after conceding a penalty, and Grant Leadbitter slotted the ball past Rob Green to get the victory. However he decided to move on to pastures new, and after a forgettable stint at Rotherham, he got promoted to the Premier League with Cardiff. After a great few years with them, he retired, only to be back at the job centre a year later. Let’s see how his tenure with Middlesbrough goes then…
